So you found out you’re pregnant…yay! Whether you’ve been trying for a while or it came as a shock, there is lots of planning to do. When do you tell your spouse, your family and friends? When should you take maternity and newborn photos? We’ve created this handy Belly to Baby Photography Timeline that will point out typical milestones captured during this journey into motherhood. Thanks to Becca at Jumping Jax Designs for turning my thoughts into something pretty.
Around four to six weeks you likely know you’re pregnant and have taken the test for proof. Do you tell your spouse as soon as you find out or do you think of a fun and creative way to tell them? This is a very personal and exciting time and there is no wrong way to handle it. Some fun ways to tell your spouse include (1) get a big brother/sister shirt for your pet; or you could (2) tell your spouse there is something sweet in the oven and have them open it to a large bun on a plate; (3) try spelling it with Scrabble or another board game; (4) plan a theme dinner with baby corn, baby carrots, baby back ribs, and see if they notice a theme; or you could (5) set an extra plate at the table for dinner. Regardless of how you choose to tell your spouse, they will likely be as excited as you are to hear the good news. (OTHER IDEAS FOR TELLING YOUR SPOUSE CAN BE FOUND HERE)
At eight to thirteen weeks, most announce they’re expecting to family and friends. For some, the idea of keeping the big news a secret any longer is too unrealistic. The advantages of telling loved ones early include not having to make excuses for feeling tired, passing on wine or sushi. Others may want to wait until the risk of miscarriage is minimal, further along in the pregnancy. This may give you less time throughout your pregnancy to celebrate with loved ones but may be a better option if you do miscarry to avoid awkwardness and uncomfortable conversations. This is a personal decision and there are advantages to announcing early or late.
Many women start showing around the end of the first trimester. This would be a great time to start taking weekly belly photos. You may not feel the glow or feel photo ready but it’s always a good idea to at least take some photos to be kept privately should you wish you had them further down the road. You can always delete them later if you’d rather not have them.
Around sixteen weeks is a great time to start looking for your photographer. Our next blog post will be focused on tips for finding the right newborn photographer for you. Finding your photographer around the four-month mark is a great idea because you may want to do gender reveal photos (SEE HERE FOR GENDER REVEAL PHOTO IDEAS) at eighteen to twenty weeks. Or if you’re having a gender reveal party, having a photographer at your party is a great way to start the photos for your baby book.
Around thirty to thirty four weeks is a great time to take maternity photos. At this point in your pregnancy, your baby bump is evident, but you most likely are not swollen or uncomfortable. (CHECK HERE FOR MATERNITY PHOTO IDEAS)
Newborn photos are ideally taken when the baby is five to fourteen days old. Newborns less than two weeks old tend to sleep better while startling less and are still used to the curly positions they enjoyed in the womb. Additionally, this time is fleeting – and your baby will already look different by three to four weeks old. Book early while you are still pregnant. Many newborn photographers book at least a few months in advance, so we recommend booking by the beginning of your third trimester. Babies grow more their first year of life than during any other period and can look completely different in just a few months time. Typically at 3-4 months we will capture the baby pushing up, or just super alert. We recommend waiting until the baby can sit up for their next milestone session which typically happens around 6-7 months. 9 Months is a wonderful time as most babies are not yet mobile, but usually easy to engage for happy smiley photos. 12 Months typically includes capturing the babies chubby legs and arms when pulling up, sometimes walking, and sometimes ends with a cake smash.
Pregnancy and your journey into motherhood is such a unique time in your life. I’m so thankful to have taken belly pictures every few weeks to remember my journey, I only wish I had captured more of the special time. However much of your journey you choose to capture, these memories are sure to be cherished photographs in the years to come. Congratulations on this new exciting chapter!
