So, I’m head-over-heels in love with Dewdrops Photography. It’s true. I have a photog crush on Amy and NO, that’s not weird and YES, it’s totally a thing. Don’t judge. I think we’d better take some time today to discuss the reasons I choose this incredible artist as my advisor and why I considered a mentorship with this gifted woman a mandatory prerequisite to being the best at what I do. Her work is unparalleled in the newborn genre and the way she seems to possess the power to bend light to her will is awe-inspiring. I told you I loved her. Don’t say you weren’t warned!
I knew that I needed to perfect the art of newborn portraiture from a professional with extensive experience whose images I adored above all else. Amy’s gallery of work is far beyond good; she is in a class all her own. Her portraits are the height of perfection – the kind of pictures that cause you to catch your breath and wonder if they are truly real. They seem to radiate light from within and are posed with an eye for absolute ethereal perfection. SOOOOOO, she clearly met my first criteria. The next critical piece of the puzzle was accessibility. I was ready to LEARN and take my portraits to the next level – the newborn genre is tough and there are so many layers to the making of those luminous photos that parents crave. I needed someone who was just as ready to teach as I was to be taught. She was willing to tailor the process JUST for me and what I needed the most. She let me in on her secrets and gave me the tools I specifically needed to go from good to GREAT. There are many photographers who might agree to mentor, but you find yourself at the end of a very long list – sometimes it takes a year or longer to end up with a private mentoring session. Amy happily arranged her schedule to fit me in within just a couple of months, which is yet another reason that she is everything that a teacher should be. She was happy to share her knowledge with me and more than willing to do whatever she could to make that happen!
She taught me SO MUCH during our time together. She was able to guide me through posing babies in just the perfect way to create organic, dream-like moments. From her impeccable styling to the flawless highlighting of newborn skin, she shared her skills. Here we have proof positive that Amy’s mentoring changed my art and took my portraits to a completely different level. Newborn mentoring with Amy made me a better photographer in every capacity. There is literally no comparison here – the little details that I learned are clearly EVERYTHING. The same pose before and after newborn mentoring with Amy.
One of my main goals during our mentorship was to learn and perfect the use of Studio Lights. I had already stumbled across many dreary, rain-soaked days when it was simply impossible to rely on natural light for a session. Due to the fact that I haven’t yet mastered the art of changing the weather at will, something had to be done. I’m a LOVER of natural light. It’s MY THING. I wasn’t a fan of shooting at 2,000 ISO (a little technical, folks!) and the grainy results that produced. However, my friends…I stand before you a convert! Amy changed the entire process for me and opened up a new world of options. Studio Lights have completely eliminated the constant worry about the weather and the need to perpetually juggle schedules thanks to impromptu rainy days. I now have the assurance of a dependable light source always available and the skill set to create the same stunning work whether rain or shine. The lights have given my work consistency, which is incredibly valuable when each and every session on my schedule is capturing one of the most important moments of a lifetime. This is why continuing education is critical to me as a professional…there is never an end to learning!
Topteny.com rated Amy as one of the TOP TEN best newborn photographers in the WORLD. Take one look at this picture and you will know exactly why. Her love for that baby is absolutely VISCERAL. Her passion for this career is showcased perfectly. The joy and love being shared between those two is palpable and I love it SO much!
Amy at Dewdrops will always be one of the most important people on my career path. She’s an artist that manages to be both genius and down-to-earth. Beyond possessing an innate gift for photography, she is incredibly sincere in her willingness to teach and share knowledge. I was privileged to be under the tutelage of such an amazing woman! So, yeah…photog crushes. I told you it was a thing.
