You know those random moments and split second decisions that seem like absolutely nothing and end up being EVERYTHING? Sort of like a star-crossed, destined, my-fortune- cookie-said-this-would-happen kind of thing? Can you see where I’m heading? This Richardson baby photographer has a fun story to share, so grab a cup of coffee and head with me to Richardson, Texas!
I had just finished up my very first newborn mentoring session and was meandering through Home Depot with visions of perfect little baby feet and drywall screws dancing in my head. I turned the corner to see a glowing pregnant mom-to-be in the aisle ahead of me and had an epiphany! That bump will be one of my first newborn shoots! I needed to start somewhere and that somewhere just might be conveniently up ahead looking at dresser knobs and handles. I hesitated – I don’t even have business cards at this point, so there’s a good chance that I’m going to come off more “scary stalker lady” than legitimate photographer – but I was still high on bundled newborns and decided to throw caution to the wind. I took a deep breath, tried to channel the look of a sane person, and introduced myself. I offered this beautiful mama a visit to my Plano photography studio for a free portfolio building session if she would allow me to use her new arrival as a model. Whether it was my sunny disposition or her hormone levels remains to be seen, but she AGREED to my plan and my collision with destiny was complete! Three short months later, I was looking at this sweet face through my lens and thanking my lucky stars for being in the right place at the right time with an extra ounce of bravery thrown in. I took my chances and won BIG!
Photographing THIS angel was clearly kismet! That face!
Mr. Cooper was the perfect subject and my favorite part of this story is that NOT ONLY did I become his mother’s baby photographer; she also became a friend. As I watched him grow past the days of a swaddled newborn into a silly little cherub looking to grab everything within reach, I began to realize that I wanted to capture more than just the newborn moments. How amazing would it be to follow these precious little ones and document their milestones? Babies change more in the first year than any other time and the astounding growth taking place makes for the most precious series of portraits!
Then and Now
One of my absolute favorite milestone photos to take is the sitter stage of their first year. These sessions are the most fun and result in the BEST portraits! It’s the perfect stage to capture babies in all of their peak adorable glory – they have become incredibly expressive and their little personalities are established and on parade! At this age, they typically haven’t hit the stranger fear stage just yet, so they are all about interacting and naturally perform at the height of adorableness for me. They can’t walk or crawl away and are still rocking all of that chubby baby goodness, so it’s a photographer’s dream! This stage is best captured at 6-9 months old – or as soon as your little one can sit steadily, but not crawl away. These sessions are so much fun for all of us involved and end up being precious memories that last forever!
Sitter sessions take place in my Plano studio and the focus is all on your baby. The surroundings are kept light, airy and neutral to keep your little one’s face the center of everything. When shooting these particular milestone photos, I love for the tone to be simple and organic. I know that parents don’t typically keep high-end neutral clothing in stock at home, so I’ve focused on cultivating a small wardrobe full of charming textured pieces that can be used for your portraits. The sizes generally fit the 6-9 month littles and are perfect for creating that singular peaceful atmosphere that you see in stunning portraiture. My muted pieces are composed of classic neutrals with just the right amount of texture to create the perfect angelic look for these pictures. The atmosphere is timeless when everything is simply “classic baby”. I would love to have your little sitter be the star in portraits just like Cooper’s. Shoot me a message and let’s get you on my schedule! You’d better make it fast because that baby will be smashing a first birthday cake before you know it!
Peaceful lighting, organic backgrounds and neutral, textured clothing come together to create classic portraits that stand the test of time.
